Dean and I like to hit the clearance shelves at Target the days following the Christmas holidays. We get the usual things like wrapping paper, ornaments, Hickory Farms goodies, and I can't leave out candy.
Yes, even though we have tried (and succeeded for the most part!) in eating more healthily, somebody put candy in our cart. Ghirardelli's to be exact. As I was snacking on one of these, I noticed something quite profound. I took a minute to notice the logo on this irresistible candy. It is an eagle (I think) that looks to be stuck in an arch, one wing is free to move about, but one wing is stuck, thus preventing him (the eagle) from moving on with it's life.
That got me thinking. Addiction is so easy to succumb to, but so incredibly hard to free ourselves from. There are a kazillion addictions in the world. Everything from pornography, to drugs and alcohol, to even food addictions. People of all ages can fall prey to this disease. Children are often addicted to sugars. Sugary cereals, lollipops, and caffeine. Yes, that includes coffee and sodas. All of this is very damaging to not only our bodies, but our minds as well. I can list a lot of people who exhibit the signs of a fast food addiction. They only operate when they have there three meals a day from their local establishments of 99 cent heart attacks in a sac, handed to them out of a drive-thru window.
Addiction is so trapping. The victims of addiction are often stuck, with one wing free to move about, while the other wing of the person is stuck, continuing to trap the victim, preventing them from becoming better. I think that is the same way with "dieting," or life style changes.
People are often afraid to change for the better. Worried it will cost to much, worried that it's not safe, worried that there spouses won't love them when they become skinny and happier. I think that's one of the reasons why so many people list "loose weight" on the New Year's Resolution, but hardly anyone actually succeeds at this, they are fearful.
I'm so glad that we found a program last year, that enables us to change our lifestyles, and break us from addictions. I am very happy to announce that I have not drunk any soda's, in the last four months!)
If you, or anyone you know are looking for a great, new lifestyle change to get healthy, and break the bands of addiction that you may be, let me know! It's a very fun program, that works, and offers tons of support.
